(All information should be free),其余四条是推论。

本章所有引文出自:dl_levy/levy_hackers_ch1-2.pdf(2010 O'Reilly 版节选,ISBN 978-1-449-38839-3)。
"All these people in charge of punching cards, feeding them into readers, and pressing buttons and switches on the machine were what was commonly called a Priesthood, and those privileged enough to submit data to those most holy priests were the official acolytes. It was an almost ritualistic exchange."
Levy
Acolyte: *Oh machine, would you accept my offer of information so you may run my program and perhaps give me a computation?*
Priest (on behalf of the machine): *We will try. We promise nothing.*
"Peter Samson and his friends had grown up with a specific relationship to the world, wherein things had meaning only if you found out how they worked. And how would you go about that if not by getting your hands on them?"
〔原文,p.14〕
"He was not the last administrator to feel the wrath of a hacker thwarted in the quest for access."
"They were lifelong disciples of a Hands-On Imperative. ... Technology was their playground."
〔原文,p.10〕
"a project undertaken or a product built not solely to fulfill some constructive goal, but with some wild pleasure taken in mere involvement, was called a 'hack.'"
要算作 hack,"the feat must be imbued with innovation, style, and technical virtuosity"(p.10)。配套行话:tool(只会念书的人)、cruft(垃圾)、munged(搞坏,*mashed until no good*)、losing(不工作)。
(Who's Who, p.xv;Ch.1, pp.14–24)
〔原文,p.xv〕
"TX-0 Filled a small room, but in the late fifties, this $3 million machine was world's first personal computer—for the community of MIT hackers that formed around it."
〔原文,p.16〕
"Oh!" Samson would say delightedly, a minute or so after someone failed to show up at the time designated in the logbook. "Make sure it doesn't go to waste!"
- 交互性改变编程:TX-0 可以边跑边改程序("you could even modify a program *while sitting at the computer*. A miracle!",p.16);
- FLIT 调试器(Dennis & Stockman 写)让程序员"在机器上即兴作曲",Levy 明确用乐手类比(pp.19–20);
- 12 岁的 Peter Deutsch 被社区接纳,是因为"by virtue of his computer knowledge he was worthy of equal treatment"(p.18)——第四条原则(唯才是论)的活例。
〔原文,p.27〕
"Something new was coalescing around the TX-0: a new way of life with a philosophy, an ethic, and a dream."
〔原文,p.27〕
"The precepts of this revolutionary Hacker Ethic were not so much debated and discussed as silently agreed upon. No manifestos were issued. No missionaries tried to gather converts. The computer did the converting, and those who seemed to follow the Hacker Ethic most faithfully were people like Samson, Saunders, and Kotok..."
准则一(p.28):
"Access to computers—and anything that might teach you something about the way the world works—should be unlimited and total. Always yield to the Hands-On Imperative!"
他给了个日常化例子:黑客恨开车,因为红灯与单行道"so goddamned *unnecessary*",冲动是去"rearrange signs, open up traffic-light control boxes... redesign the entire system"(p.28)。TMRC 由此诞生了"MIDnight Requisitioning Committee"——半夜去各处"征用"二极管和继电器,而这些人"who were as a rule scrupulously honest in other matters, seemed to equate this with 'stealing.'"
〔原文,p.28〕
"None of the hackers, who were as a rule scrupulously honest in other matters, seemed to equate this with 'stealing.' A willful blindness."
准则二(p.28):
"All information should be free."
"If you don't have access to the information you need to improve things, how can you fix them? A free exchange of information... allowed for greater overall creativity. ... What was a computer but something that benefited from a free flow of information? If, say, the accumulator found itself unable to get information from the input/output (I/O) devices like the tape reader or the switches, the whole system would collapse. In the hacker viewpoint, any system could benefit from that easy flow of information."
Tools to Make Tools, kept in the drawer by the console for easy access by anyone using the machine"(p.29),以避免 reinventing the wheel。
准则三(p.29):
"Mistrust Authority—Promote Decentralization."
对象非常具体:bureaucracy(公司、政府、大学的科层制),其原型是 IBM——"batch-processed people"(p.30):
〔原文,p.29〕
"Bureaucrats hide behind arbitrary rules (as opposed to the logical algorithms by which machines and computer programs operate): they invoke those rules to consolidate power, and perceive the constructive impulse of hackers as a threat."
准则四(p.31):
"Hackers should be judged by their hacking, not bogus criteria such as degrees, age, race, or position."
例证即 12 岁的 Deutsch;反向例证是"people who trotted in with seemingly impressive credentials were not taken seriously until they proved themselves at the console of a computer"。Levy 补了一句冷峻的诚实:这种精英制"was not necessarily rooted in the inherent goodness of hacker hearts—it was mainly that hackers cared less about someone's superficial characteristics than they did about his potential to advance the general state of hacking"(p.31)。
准则五(p.31):
"You can create art and beauty on a computer."
The code of the program held a beauty of its own"(p.31)。 People would stare at the code and their jaws would drop."(p.33)——Bob Saunders 后来说:
〔原文,p.34〕
"'We knew that was the end of it,' Bob Saunders later said. 'That was Nirvana.'"
准则六(p.34):
"Computers can change your life for the better."
〔原文,p.34〕
"We did it twenty-five to thirty percent for the sake of doing it because it was something we could do and do well, and sixty percent for the sake of having something which was in its metaphorical way alive, our offspring, which would do things on its own when we were finished."
"Like Aladdin's lamp, you could get it to do your bidding."(p.34)本章的收束段把六条准则外推成一种社会改造论——Levy 明白写出了黑客伦理的传教野心(尽管第 27 页刚说"没有传教士"):
〔原文,p.37〕
"If *everyone* could interact with computers with the same innocent, productive, creative impulse that hackers did, the Hacker Ethic might spread through society like a benevolent ripple, and computers would indeed change the world for the better."
〔原文,p.38〕
"In the monastic confines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, people had the freedom to live out this dream—the hacker dream. No one dared suggest that the dream might spread. Instead, people set about building, right there at MIT, a hacker Xanadu, the likes of which might never be duplicated."
(Preface, pp.ix–x)
〔原文,p.ix〕
"It was a philosophy of sharing, openness, decentralization, and getting your hands on machines at any cost to improve the machines and to improve the world. This Hacker Ethic is their gift to us: something with value even to those of us with no interest at all in computers."
〔原文,p.x〕
"It is an ethic seldom codified but embodied instead in the behavior of hackers themselves. ... these are the backroom geniuses who understood the machine at its most profound levels and presented us with a new kind of lifestyle and a new kind of hero."
- Part One TRUE HACKERS — Cambridge: The Fifties and Sixties(Ch.1–7:TMRC、Hacker Ethic、Spacewar、Greenblatt & Gosper、Midnight Computer Wiring Society、Winners and Losers、Life)
- Part Two HARDWARE HACKERS — Northern California: The Seventies(Ch.8–13:Revolt in 2100、Every Man a God、The Homebrew Computer Club、Tiny BASIC、Woz、Secrets)
- Part Three GAME HACKERS — The Sierras: The Eighties(Ch.14–20:The Wizard and the Princess、The Brotherhood、The Third Generation、Summer Camp、Frogger、Applefest、Wizard vs. Wizards)
- Part Four THE LAST OF THE TRUE HACKERS — Cambridge: 1983(Stallman
- 第一代(MIT):共享发生在机房——好程序贴告示板、存进"程序抽屉";
- 第二代(加州):共享对象从黑客扩展到公众——Community Memory 把第一台社区计算机放在伯克利 Leopold's Records 门口;Bob Albrecht 的 People's Computer Company 以 50 美分/小时向所有人开放机时;
- 第三代(游戏业):共享遭遇版权与商业——"hackers are no longer limited to collaboration in geographic regions. Now collaboration takes place via the Internet"(来源 #2 引 Raymond *The Cathedral and the Bazaar*)。
Gates 与 Allen 为 Altair 8800 写的 BASIC 被黑客社区复制传播(Homebrew 俱乐部成员 Dan Sokol 曾"liberate"载有程序的纸带——见来源 #1 Who's Who p.xv:"Helped 'liberate' Altair BASIC program on paper tape"),Gates 宣称损失惨重,写下《Open Letter to Hobbyists》(1976),发表于多家刊物、"most notably that of the Homebrew Computer Club"。
尾章与制度化(来源 #4):Levy 以 Stallman 结尾("The Last of the True Hackers"),本意近乎挽歌——Stallman 在同伴离开 AI Lab 去做 Lisp Machine 生意后陷入孤独。但 Haigh 指出:"within a decade, software produced by Stallman's GNU project and Linus Torvald's work to replicate the Unix kernel had begun to challenge commercial versions of Unix",自由软件以许可证(GPL)这一制度创新"replicating key aspects of the original hacker culture";到 2000 年代初,"free software was eclipsing commercial rivals in crucial areas such as Web browsers and servers, database management systems, and programming platforms",连 Android 都"built on top of free software",Wikipedia 则是"similarly inspired by the hacker ethic"的开放文化产物。
"On the one hand information wants to be expensive, because it's so valuable. The right information in the right place just changes your life. On the other hand, information wants to be free, because the cost of getting it out is getting lower and lower all the time. So you have these two fighting against each other."
"Information wants to be free because it has become so cheap to distribute, copy, and recombine—too cheap to meter. It wants to be expensive because it can be immeasurably valuable to the recipient... That tension will not go away."
Pekka Himanen《The Hacker Ethic and the Spirit of the Information Age》(Torvalds 作序、Castells 作跋)把黑客伦理升格为新教工作伦理的对照物:围绕 passion、hard work、creativity、joy in creating software;Himanen 认为它更接近柏拉图与亚里士多德的美德伦理,而非韦伯式的天职伦理。
4.3 激进化回声:Swartz(来源 #6)
Swartz 2008 年《Guerilla Open Access Manifesto》开头:
"Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves."
"The world's entire scientific and cultural heritage... is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations."
"We need to take information, wherever it is stored, make our copies and share them with the world."
"The Hacker Way is an approach to building that involves continuous improvement and iteration. Hackers believe that something can always be better..."
Haigh(来源 #4)把这条线画得更直:Levy 笔下黑客看到低效就"redesign it, without seeking permission","That is not so far from Facebook's motto of 'move fast and break things,' or from an admonition of Zuckerberg's that Levy quotes in the introduction to his recent *Facebook: The Inside Story*: 'think of every problem as a system. And every system can be better.'" Haigh 的警告:
"The 'determined solipsism' that engulfed the 9th floor of MIT's Tech Square back in 1968 now hangs like a dense cloud over much of Silicon Valley. Perhaps we need some different heroes."
(Haigh:"Making hackers into heroes, rather than figures of fun or threat, was a bold move";NYT 书评人 Lehmann-Haupt 的刻薄版:"it's hard to tell whether [Levy] is celebrating the arrival of an inexpensive home computer or lamenting its astonishing profitability.")。
Haigh——"reading the list is no alternative to understanding these beliefs in their original context."
What was exceptional about MIT was not that it had a computer... It was that MIT had enough computers that a couple of surplus machines could be left out for members of the community to play with." (Rankin, *A People's History of Computing in the United States*, 2018,经 Haigh 注 a)。
- Weizenbaum 的"瘾君子"画像(1976,*Computer Power and Human Reason*,经 Haigh 转引):"bright, young men of disheveled appearance, often with sunken glowing eyes... Their rumpled clothes, their unwashed and unshaven faces, and their uncombed hair all testify that they are oblivious to their bodies and to the world in which they move."
- Turkle 的发展心理学批评(1984,*The Second Self*,经 Haigh 转引):黑客"got stuck"在青春期——拒绝在"perfect mastery"(可控的物世界)与"uncertain outcomes and emotional risks"(人际的 real world)之间做成年人式的和解,并发展出"highly ritualized"的文化将此选择正常化。
Hacking had replaced sex in their lives"与"The sad fact was that there never was a star-quality female hacker"(经 Haigh 转引);Haigh 补充了一个时间巧合:CS 学生中女性比例在 1985 年(家用计算机把编程重塑为卧室亚文化之后几年)开始跳水,"a polarizing association of computing with a new and distinctive form of masculinity"(相关非因果,Haigh 自己也如此标注)。
- 军方资助矛盾:Haigh 找出 Levy 自己最接近自我批评的一句话——AI Lab 一切活动 "even the most zany or anarchistic manifestations of the Hacker Ethic, had been funded by the Department of Defense";反战示威者在楼下,黑客在楼上,"a very determined solipsism reigned on the 9th floor"。
Fisher & Sitter "Unintended Consequences of the 'Hacker Ethic'"(*ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society* 45(3): 18–24)——〔转引,原文未核对〕经 *Cybersecurity Ethics: An Introduction*(Routledge)引用:该伦理无法解释"spying and invading people's privacy is wrong",其"if the Hands-On Imperative is restricted, then the ends justify the means"的逻辑(对应 Levy p.28 的 willful blindness 段)被指为后续越界行为的伦理接口。
- Stallman 的去神秘化(来源 #2,2002 年访谈):Stallman 本人把"黑客"与"伦理"拆开——"Just because someone enjoys hacking does not mean he has an ethical commitment to treating other people properly. ... Hacking is not primarily about an ethical issue." 另澄清 free 指"unrestricted access; it does not refer to price"。
Stallman "the last true hacker" 的挽歌判断错了——"Stallman's fear that he would become like *Ishi, the last Yahi* was not realized";甚至说六条准则 "now seem so obvious that new readers may wonder why I even bothered writing them down"——这恰恰是制度化成功的痕迹。
No manifestos were issued. The computer did the converting";② 其内核是认识论(拆开才能理解世界)+ 架构类比(信息自由流动是任何系统运转的条件),政治主张(mistrust authority)是推论而非公理;③ 它的传播史是一部"误引史":Brand 双价命题被剪半、Hacker Way 被做成上市价值观、"free"被 Stallman 反复澄清为自由而非免费。 |
- "Tools to Make Tools" 是夜间知识系统的原型。TMRC 黑客把写好的程序放进控制台旁的抽屉,"easy access by anyone using the machine",以避免 reinventing the wheel——我的
- 引用"information wants to be free"必须引全句。
三条线(制度化/激进化/商品化)是可直接复用的分析框架:同一句话(continuous improvement / move fast and break things / all information should be free)在不同主体手里是完全不同的东西。
