昨日(2026-11-04)条目 2026-11-04-knowledge-1rpcjl3b-4-保罗格雷厄姆文集三篇精读-品味-黑客-努力-Taste-for-Makers-Great-Hackers-How-to-Work-Hard.md 已收录 *Taste for Makers / Great Hackers / How to Work Hard*。

  1. 三篇主体中 *Hackers and Painters*(技术)与 *How to Do Great Work*(创造)为新文本,仅 *Taste for Makers* 与昨日重叠(本笔记以"技术×创造×品味"三元组框架重新处理它);
  2. 补入 2021 年 *Is There Such a Thing as Good Taste?* 的归谬论证作为品味命题的哲学地基,昨日条目未涉及;

Hackers and Painters(May 2003)

  1. 黑客是 maker(制作者),不是科学家:"What hackers and painters have in common is that they're both makers."
Computer science is a grab bag of tenuously related areas thrown together by an accident of history, like Yugoslavia."(像南斯拉夫一样被历史偶然捆在一起)。黑客把计算机当作表达媒介:"as concrete is for architects or paint for painters."
At its best, it's creating the spec-- though it turns out the best way to do that is to implement it."
It's easy to drift away from building beautiful things toward building ugly things that make more suitable subjects for research papers."
  5. 黑客的工作方式更像画家:边写边想(sketching,"You should figure out programs as you're writing them, just as writers and painters and architects do.")、逐步逼近(油画式 layering)、语言应是铅笔不是钢笔("A programming language is for thinking of programs, not for expressing programs you've already thought of. It should be a pencil, not a pen.")。
Universities and research labs force hackers to be scientists, and companies force them to be engineers." 大公司由委员会做设计以压低结果方差,但 "Big companies win by sucking less than other big companies."
open-source is probably the right model, because it has been independently confirmed by all the other makers"(音乐人、画家、作家都这么活过来的)。
Empathy is probably the single most important difference between a good hacker and a great one."
A new medium appears, and people are so excited about it that they explore most of its possibilities in the first couple generations. Hacking seems to be in this phase now."

方法

类比论证为主干:把 hacking 放进 maker 族群(画家/作家/建筑师)做系统映射——学习方式(learn by doing)、草图(sketching)、逐步细化(gradual refinement)、合作方式(大师画主景、学徒画背景,"you never had one guy painting over the work of another")、评价方式(时间)。辅以作者亲历的三个机构样本:研究生院(被"应该懂理论"困扰)、Yahoo(产品经理出 spec、程序员只 implement)、Viaweb(自己设计+实现并赢利)。

How to Do Great Work(July 2023)

Four steps: choose a field, learn enough to get to the frontier, notice gaps, explore promising ones." 这是"practically everyone who's done great work has done it"的通用路径。
There's a kind of excited curiosity that's both the engine and the rudder of great work.";"Curiosity is the best guide. Your curiosity never lies, and it knows more than you do about what's worth paying attention to."
  4. 选题没人能替你做:"when it comes to figuring out what to work on, you're on your own." It's sometimes necessary, but it's a necessary evil."
Interest will drive you to work harder than mere diligence ever could.";但"fatigue will make you stupid",最难的工作一天可能只能做四五个小时,且要整块时间。
  6. 按项目拖延最危险:"per-project procrastination ... usually camouflages itself as work." Am I working on what I most want to work on?"
Writing a page a day doesn't sound like much, but if you do it every day you'll write a book a year. That's the key: consistency."
Consciously cultivate your taste in the work done in your field. Until you know which is the best and what makes it so, you don't know what you're aiming for.";"if you don't try to be the best, you won't even be good."(遥望百年:"try to make something that people will care about in a hundred years.")
  9. 拒绝做作、保持 earnest:"Style is doing things in a distinctive way without trying to. Trying to is affectation.";"The core of being earnest is being intellectually honest."(诚实不只是美德,是看清新想法的工具)。
Originality isn't a process, but a habit of mind.";"Original ideas don't come from trying to have original ideas. They come from trying to build or understand something slightly too difficult."
A really good question is a partial discovery.";"People think big ideas are answers, but often the real insight was in the question."
  12. 严格与破格不矛盾:"in questions that really matter, only rule-breakers can be truly strict."(Einstein 因比常人更严格才看到 Maxwell 方程的 wild implications)。
When an idea seems simultaneously novel and obvious, it's probably a good one.";"ideas that are the right kind of crazy tend to be exciting; they're rich in implications; whereas ideas that are merely bad tend to be depressing."
An early version of a new project will sometimes be dismissed as a toy. It's a good sign when people do this.";成功前被叫"toy"说明它具备新想法所需的一切、只差规模。
The factors in doing great work are factors in the literal, mathematical sense, and they are: ability, interest, effort, and luck." luck 不可控、effort 可假设,问题归结为 ability × interest 的交点能否引发"explosion of new ideas"。

方法

作者在开篇声明方法:交集法——"If you collected lists of techniques for doing great work in a lot of different fields, what would the intersection look like? I decided to find out by making it."

Do you want to do great work, or not? Now you have to decide consciously." 以及 "The discoveries are out there, waiting to be made. Why not by you?"

篇三(品味):Taste for Makers(February 2002)+ 品味补篇(Nov 2021)

Saying that taste is just personal preference is a good way to prevent disputes. The trouble is, it's not true. You feel this when you start to design things."
  2. 品味可错因此存在:设计者在变强的过程中"your old tastes were not merely different, but worse. Poof goes the axiom that taste can't be wrong."
    • Good design is simple:"When you're forced to be simple, you're forced to face the real problem. When you can't deliver ornament, you have to deliver substance."
    • Good design is timeless:"Aiming at timelessness is a way to make yourself find the best answer: if you can imagine someone surpassing you, you should do it yourself."(向过去找未来:能同时取悦 1500 年与今天的人,才可能取悦 2500 年)
    • Good design solves the right problem(炉灶旋钮排成方形而非一排)
    • Good design is suggestive(对软件=给用户可自由组合的乐高)
    • Good design is often slightly funny(幽默与力量相关;作者自注"may not always be true")
    • Good design is hard:"If you're not working hard, you're probably wasting your time.";"Wild animals are beautiful because they have hard lives."
    • Good design looks easy:"The easy, conversational tone of good writing comes only on the eighth rewrite."
    • Good design uses symmetry(重复与递归;递归在数学与软件里是大赢)
    • Good design resembles nature(自然有更长的时间打磨答案)
    • Good design is redesign:"Mistakes are natural. Instead of treating them as disasters, make them easy to acknowledge and easy to fix.";"Open-source software has fewer bugs because it admits the possibility of bugs."
    • Good design can copy:"The only style worth having is the one you can't help."(米开朗基罗不是想画得像米开朗基罗)
    • Good design is often strange(Euler 公式、SR-71、Lisp;但 strangeness 不可直接追求:"He tried to make it true, and the truth turned out to be strange.")
    • Good design happens in chunks(佛罗伦萨 vs 米兰:"to make Leonardo you need more than his innate ability. You also need Florence in 1450.")
    • Good design is often daring(关注共识与真相不重合处)
The recipe for great work is: very exacting taste, plus the ability to gratify it."(极其挑剔的品味+满足它的能力)
Nothing is more powerful than a community of talented people working on related problems."
  6. 补篇(Is There Such a Thing as Good Taste?, Nov 2021)给出正面论证:归谬法——"If we start from the premise that there's no such thing as good taste, we end up with conclusions that are obviously false, and therefore the premise must be wrong."(否则"我们无法说任何画家优于随机选出的八岁小孩");本体论解法——主客二分是程度问题:"the distinction between 'objective' and 'subjective' is not binary, but a matter of degree"(疫苗有效性类比:效果发生在个体免疫系统中,不妨碍谈论疫苗有效性);并承认品味只有偏序:"There is definitely not a total order either of works or of people's ability to judge them. But there is equally definitely a partial order of both. So while it's not possible to have perfect taste, it is possible to have good taste."

You have to understand a field well before you develop a good nose for what needs fixing.")。

Taste for Makers (2002)Hackers and Painters (2003)How to Do Great Work (2023)
学习临摹大师、Good design can copy临摹=读源码;learn by doing公开地抄:"Great artists steal"(好抄法)
迭代Good design is redesign渐进细化、premature design 警告successive versions、被叫"toy"是好信号
简单forced to be simple → face the real problem语言要抽象、程序要短Begin by trying the simplest thing that could possibly work
环境Florence in 1450、hotspots新媒介的黄金时代great work happens in clusters、找最好同事
终极判据timeless(对 1500/2500 都成立)The only external test is timemake something people will care about in a hundred years
引擎intolerant of ugliness → "What a hack!" 的声音fanatical devotion to beautyexcited curiosity(engine and rudder)
