|---|---|---|---|
| Great Hackers | 2004 |
| How to Work Hard | 2021 |
| Taste for Makers | 2002 |
- Great Hackers 提出 design paradox:"you can't manage a process intended to produce beautiful things without knowing what beautiful is"(你无法管理一个产出美的事物的过程,如果你不知道美是什么)——这直接把读者推向 Taste for Makers 的议题;
- Taste for Makers 结尾给出配方:"The recipe for great work is: very exacting taste, plus the ability to gratify it."(伟大工作的配方:极其苛刻的品味,加上满足它的能力)——"能力从哪来"正是 How to Work Hard 的主题;
- How to Work Hard 注释[1] 自认公式演化:"In 'The Bus Ticket Theory of Genius' I said the three ingredients in great work were natural ability, determination, and interest. That's the formula in the preceding stage; determination and interest yield practice and effort."——四篇构成一条 2002→2021 的思想演化链:品味 → 兴趣 → 努力;
1709 Darwin is to time what the Milanese Leonardo is to space."(1709 年的达尔文之于时间,等于米兰的达·芬奇之于空间。)
2.1 Taste for Makers(2002):
- 品味客观性的论证:Graham 承认"品味是主观的"有社交功能——"Saying that taste is just personal preference is a good way to prevent disputes. The trouble is, it's not true."(说品味只是个人偏好是避免争吵的好办法。
"But if your job is to design things, and there is no such thing as beauty, then there is *no way to get better at your job.*"(如果你的工作是设计东西,而美并不存在,那你就没有办法把工作做得更好。)
Poof goes the axiom that taste can't be wrong."(品味不会错这条公理就泡汤了。)
- Good design is simple(好设计是简单的)——数学里更短的证明更好;写作里"say what you mean and say it briefly";
- timeless(超越时间)——反证法:丑的东西不可能是最优解,"There must be a better one, and eventually someone will discover it.";想打动未来的人,办法是打动过去的人:"if you can make something that appeals to people today and would also have appealed to people in 1500, there is a good chance it will appeal to people in 2500.";
- solves the right problem(解决对的问题)——灶具旋钮排成一行是"对错误问题的简单回答";sans-serif 排正文可读性反而差(Times Roman 的小写 g 和 y 好区分);
- suggestive(启发性的)——简·奥斯汀几乎不写景;软件里是"give users a few basic elements that they can combine as they wish, like Lego";
- often slightly funny(常常有点好笑)——"humor is related to strength";
- hard(难的)——"Wild animals are beautiful because they have hard lives."(野生动物美,是因为它们活得艰难。)画人脸难才逼出真功夫;
- looks easy(看起来轻松)——"The easy, conversational tone of good writing comes only on the eighth rewrite.";
- uses symmetry(用对称)——重复与递归两种;递归在软件里"nearly always best solved that way";
- resembles nature(像自然)——不是自然神圣,而是"nature has had a long time to work on the problem";
- is redesign(是重设计)——"Experts expect to throw away some early work.";"if anything you should cultivate dissatisfaction"(你该培养的恰恰是不满足感);莱昂纳多发明草图就是为了让画"bear a greater weight of exploration";开源软件 bug 更少"because it admits the possibility of bugs";
- can copy(可以抄)——品味成长三段论:无意识模仿 → 刻意原创 → "he decides it's more important to be right than original";
- often strange(常常怪异)——欧拉公式、布鲁盖尔、SR-71、Lisp;"The only style worth having is the one you can't help."(唯一值得拥有的风格是你忍不住的那种。)没有通往怪异的捷径——"The only way to get there is to go through good and come out the other side.";
- happens in chunks(成簇出现)——15 世纪佛罗伦萨 vs 同等规模的米兰:"A thousand Leonardos and a thousand Michelangelos walk among us... You also need Florence in 1450.";"Nothing is more powerful than a community of talented people working on related problems.";
- 品味从哪来:不是凭空想象美,而是修丑——"It's easier to see ugliness than to imagine beauty. Most of the people who've made beautiful things seem to have done it by fixing something that they thought ugly."(看丑比想象美容易。 结论配方:"very exacting taste, plus the ability to gratify it." Don't ignore those voices.
2.2 Great Hackers(2004):
- 质变论:从 Fred Brooks(Graham 文中写 1974,并说 Brooks 引的研究发表于 1968)说起——最好的程序员能用十分之一时间解决给定问题,但 Graham 认为这低估了差异:
"But what if the problem isn't given? In programming, as in many fields, the hard part isn't solving problems, but deciding what problems to solve."(可要是问题不是给定的呢?
技术放大生产率差异:"in every field the lever is getting longer";推论是当"90% of a group's output is created by 1% of its members"时,把顶尖者拉到平均水平的代价是灾难性的。
- 有趣胜过钱:"Great hackers think of it as something they do for fun, and which they're delighted to find people will pay them for.";因此"you don't have to pay great hackers anything like what they're worth"——10 到 100 倍的产出,3 倍薪水就谢天谢地;
- 好工具:"Good hackers find it unbearable to use bad tools.";选语言=选社区:"A programming language is a medium of expression."(编程语言是表达媒介,不只是标准。)"the fact that good hackers prefer Python to Java should tell you something about the relative merits of those languages.";
- 免打扰的办公室:"making hackers work in a noisy, distracting environment is like having a paint factory where the air is full of soot."(让黑客在嘈杂环境工作,等于开一家空气里全是烟尘的颜料厂。)想知道什么工具最好,看他们在家自愿用什么:"open source operating systems already have a dominant market share, and the number one language is probably Perl."(2004 年语境);
- 有趣的问题:问题可以人为定义得有趣——ITA 把机票查询重新定义为更野心的问题;Google 创立时门户们觉得搜索无聊,"But the guys at Google didn't think search was boring";乔布斯把 Mac 的问题重新定义为"make one that's beautiful";
Great hackers tend to clump together... it's more like the square of the environment. So it's winner take all. At any given time, there are only about ten or twenty places where hackers most want to work, and if you aren't one of them, you won't just have fewer great hackers, you'll have zero."(聚集效应是环境的平方,赢家通吃。)
- Design paradox(与品味篇直接互文):"You might think that you could make your products beautiful just by hiring a great designer... But if you yourself don't have good taste, how are you going to recognize a good designer? By definition you can't tell from his portfolio." American cars are ugly because American car companies are run by people with bad taste."(美国车丑,是因为美国车厂的管理者品味差。)
- nasty little problems:修 bug 接口类工作学不到东西,"the bugs are random"——"Working on nasty little problems makes you stupid. Good hackers avoid it for the same reason models avoid cheeseburgers."(干琐碎烂问题让人变蠢。
- 识别难题:判断黑客只有一条路——"It seems like the only way to judge a hacker is to work with him on something.";连本人也不知道自己多好:"people who are great at something are not so much convinced of their own greatness as mystified at why everyone else seems so incompetent.";"If there is a Michael Jordan of hacking, no one knows, including him."。
The key to being a good hacker may be to work on what you like.";"Try to keep the sense of wonder you had about programming at age 14. If you're worried that your current job is rotting your brain, it probably is."(担心现在的工作正在腐蚀你的大脑?
"you never have to work on boring projects (unless your family will starve otherwise), and in return, you'll never allow yourself to do a half-assed job."(你永远不必做无聊的项目——除非全家会挨饿——作为交换,你永远不许糊弄了事。)
2.3 How to Work Hard(2021):
There are three ingredients in great work: natural ability, practice, and effort. You can do pretty well with just two, but to do the best work you need all three." Bill Gates("I never took a day off in my twenties. Not one.")、Messi(青训教练记住的是投入而非天赋)、Wodehouse(74 岁仍"rewrite every sentence ten times. Or in many cases twenty times.")。
There's a faint xor between talent and hard work."——两者都稀有,兼有者"rare squared";而天赋改不了,所以"doing great work, insofar as you can, reduces to working very hard."(伟大工作里你能控制的那部分,归结为非常努力。)
而且学校把学科扭曲了(Hardy 少年时把数学当考试工具,直到大学读到 Jordan 的 *Cours d'analyse*:"I shall never forget the astonishment with which I read that remarkable work... and learnt for the first time as I read it what mathematics really meant.")。 There's a kind of solidity to real work."(真工作有一种扎实感。)
- 努力的上限:多数智力工作超过某个时长质量下降——"My limit for the harder types of writing or programming is about five hours a day.";"The only way to find the limit is by crossing it.";而且诚实必须双向:既要识别偷懒,也要识别过劳——"if you think there's something admirable about working too hard, get that idea out of your head. You're not merely getting worse results, but getting them because you're showing off."(以为过劳值得敬佩?
Working hard means aiming toward the center — toward the most ambitious problems."且"By center, though, I mean the actual center, not merely the current consensus about the center."(是真实的核心,不是当下公认的核心——共识错了就是新机会。)
A deep interest in a topic makes people work harder than any amount of discipline can."
莫扎特式收敛很快,牛顿式反复横跳,"this is an illusion induced by hindsight bias"(回头看才显得像命中注定);还有一类人一辈子不收敛——对这些人,"figuring out what to work on is not so much a prelude to working hard as an ongoing part of it, like one of a set of simultaneous equations."(找到做什么不是努力的前奏,而是努力的一部分,像联立方程组里的一元。) The best test of whether it's worthwhile to work on something is whether you find it interesting."——前提是诚实。
Working hard is not just a dial you turn up to 11. It's a complicated, dynamic system that has to be tuned just right at each point... This network is too complicated to trick. But if you're consistently honest and clear-sighted, it will automatically assume an optimal shape."(这个网络复杂到骗不了。
The Bus Ticket Theory of Genius(2019):兴趣是第三要素
- 一句话配方:"to have a disinterested obsession with something that matters."(对一件重要的事抱有无功利色彩的着迷。)"
- 兴趣一石三鸟:既是能力的代理("Unless you have sufficient mathematical aptitude, you won't find series interesting"),又是决心的替代品(好奇心拉着走就不用硬推),还带来运气(巴斯德:"chance favors the prepared mind")。
If they looked promising, other people would already have explored them."
- 风险/收益定律同样适用于探索:"it may be that to do great work, you also have to waste a lot of time." But we don't know how often, because these people don't become famous."(作者自己点了幸存者偏差。)
- 实用推论:对太有野心的人,"the way to do great work is to relax a little";对抗年龄衰退的办法是"remain irresponsible"(保持不靠谱);对 Hamming 名问"你领域最重要的难题是什么、你为什么没在做"——Graham 提供了替换问法:"if you could take a year off to work on something that probably wouldn't be important but would be really interesting, what would it be?"
3. 方法
- 文体:三条都是 essay(议论文/随笔),不是论文。
- 自我修正机制:他公开标注不确定性——How to Work Hard 注释[1] 修正自己 2019 年的公式("That's the formula in the preceding stage");Bus Ticket 直接写"I'm not sure if this is true"(浪费时间的必要性);Great Hackers 开头"I don't know if it's possible to make yourself into one [great hacker]"。
- 引用:Thomas Kuhn《哥白尼革命》——"Copernicus' aesthetic objections to [equants] provided one essential motive for his rejection of the Ptolemaic system";Ben Rich《Skunk Works》——"an airplane that looked beautiful would fly the same way";G. H. Hardy——"Beauty is the first test: there is no permanent place in this world for ugly mathematics."(篇首三连引,为"品味是专业判断"定调。)
- 量化类比:美国现有人口约为 15 世纪佛罗伦萨的一千倍——"A thousand Leonardos and a thousand Michelangelos walk among us."(修辞证据,非统计。)
- 自身经历数据点:Viaweb 期间 Robert Morris 当系统管理员("That's like having the Rolling Stones play at a bar mitzvah");Trevor Blackwell 一天写完 Segway 软件(Python);从垃圾堆捡回的 Mac SE 开机即用;NT 创业公司几个月后倒闭(注释[2]:"They did turn out to be doomed.")。
- 论断类(无引用):"90% of a group's output is created by 1% of its members"是 Graham 自己的设问句式,未给来源;"ten or twenty places where hackers most want to work"同为经验断言。
- Bill Gates:"I never took a day off in my twenties.
I am ashamed to tell you to how many figures I carried these computations"(注释[6] 引书信)、"1830 是博物学家的好年份——达尔文若生于 1709 就没人听说过他"。
Bus Ticket 自己承认:"might one make all bad bets? It probably happens quite often. But we don't know how often, because these people don't become famous."——他点了问题但没解决:对赌输的大多数,"追随兴趣"的建议可能是灾难性的。
- 三篇均为全文精读,但未读中译本对照(阮一峰译《黑客与画家》收录前两篇,本次未核译文);
- 未检索对 Graham 的系统性批评文献(如对其 VC 立场的学术批判);
Cultivate them.")。
The only way to find the limit is by crossing it"——先超一次,记录质量下降的具体表现,再校准。
- 换赛道判据用"兴趣测试"而非"沉没成本":努力篇与 Bus Ticket 给出同一判据——"whether you find it interesting"。
- 给自己造"佛罗伦萨":三篇都指向环境(chunks/clumping/Florence 1450)。 聚集是平方效应——"if you aren't one of them, you won't just have fewer great hackers, you'll have zero",反之亦然。
- 躲开"nasty little problems":接活/选项目前问一句——这问题学得到东西吗,还是"the bugs are random"?
- 签约那笔"契约":never boring projects / never half-assed。
