"Clean code that works, in Ron Jeffries' pithy phrase, is the goal of Test-Driven Development (TDD)."
"In Test-Driven Development, we • Write new code only if an automated test has failed • Eliminate duplication"

"1. Red—Write a little test that doesn't work, and perhaps doesn't even compile at first. 2. Green—Make the test work quickly, committing whatever sins necessary in the process. 3. Refactor—Eliminate all of the duplication created in merely getting the test to work. Red/green/refactor—the TDD mantra."

"Test-driven development is a way of managing fear during programming."
"Fear makes you tentative. Fear makes you want to communicate less. Fear makes you shy away from feedback. Fear makes you grumpy."
"The tests in test-driven development are the teeth of the ratchet. Once we get one test working, we know it is working, now and forever."(测试是棘轮的齿:水桶越重,齿距要越密——问题越难,每步测试覆盖要越小。)

"TDD isn't an absolute the way that XP is. TDD is a little fuzzier. TDD is an awareness of the gap between decision and feedback during programming, and techniques to control that gap. 'What if I do a paper design for a week, then test-drive the code? Is that TDD?' Sure, it's TDD."

"There certainly are programming tasks that can't be driven solely by tests (or at least, not yet). Security software and concurrency, for example, are two topics where TDD is insufficient to mechanically demonstrate that the goals of the software have been met."

(Introduction, p. xix):

"If you are a genius, you don't need these rules. If you are a dolt, the rules won't help. For the vast majority of us in between, following these two simple rules can lead us to work much more closely to our potential."
"• Write a failing automated test before you write any code. • Remove duplication."

"Triangulation feels funny to me. I use it only when I am completely unsure of how to refactor."

《TDD is dead》

"Test-first fundamentalism is like abstinence-only sex ed: An unrealistic, ineffective morality campaign for self-loathing and shaming."

"My name is David, and I do not write software test-first. I refuse to apologize for that any more, much less hide it."

"Test-first units leads to an overly complex web of intermediary objects and indirection in order to avoid doing anything that's 'slow'. Like hitting the database. Or file IO. ... It's given birth to some truly horrendous monstrosities of architecture. A dense jungle of service objects, command patterns, and worse."

值得注意的是 DHH 明确保留了两样东西:自动化回归测试本身("Long live testing")与对另一种新宗教的警惕("The worst thing we can do is just rush into another testing religion. I can just imagine the golden calf of 'system tests only!' right now.")。

《Test-induced design damage》

"damage ... defined as changes to your code that either facilitates a) easier test-first, b) speedy tests, or c) unit tests, but does so by harming the clarity of the code through — usually through needless indirection and conceptual overhead."

"Above all, you do not let your tests drive your design, you let your design drive your tests!"
"The design integrity of your system is far more important than being able to test it any particular layer. Stop obsessing about unit tests, embrace backfilling of tests when you're happy with the design."

Kent Beck

"Frequency: how rapidly do we want our feedback? Fidelity: how accurate do we want the red/green signal to be? Overhead: how much are we prepared to pay? Lifespan: how long is this software going to be around, which is probability as well as time."

Kent

"it depends, and that's going to be the beginning to all of my answers to any question that's interesting"

对"过度测试"(第四集)的回应包括:测试/生产代码行数比是"a bogus metric"(伪指标);真正该用的是 Herb Derby 的 delta coverage——"Tests with zero delta coverage should be deleted unless they provide some kind of communication purpose"(零增量覆盖的测试应删除);以及那句"you aren't paid to write tests, you just write enough to be confident"。

Kent:"ascribing test-induced damage to TDD was like driving a car to a bad place and blaming the car for it."(把测试诱导的设计损伤归罪于 TDD,就像开车去了个坏地方却怪罪汽车。)
但他也承认抽象边界的代价:"you may think you're decoupled, but you're really, really not."

关于 Facebook 的第一手经验(第一集):hackathon 中"about half of which he could use TDD and half wasn't suitable",非 TDD 部分他仍然用回归测试与短反馈环——"it's like playing both classical and jazz"(像同时演奏古典乐和爵士乐)。

(Kent):

"TDD isn't dead, but is glad David set fire to it so it could come out like a phoenix."(TDD 没死,但感谢 DHH 放的这把火——让它像凤凰一样涅槃。)

"I recognize that TDD loses value as tests take longer to run, as the number of possible faults per test failure increases, as tests become [more coupled to the implementation, and as the test environment's fidelity to production decreases]."

"tdd is not 'alive' or 'dead'. it is subject to tradeoffs, including risk of api changes, skill of practitioner, and existing design."

2.5 Hillel Wayne 2017:

《Why TDD Isn't Crap》是对 Eric Smith《Why TDD is Crap》演讲的逐点反驳,姿态是谨慎的肯定:

"A lack of hard data on TDD is more a comment on our industry than it is on TDD."(TDD 缺硬数据,更多是我们这个行业的 comment,而非 TDD 本身的。)
"That cautiously suggests that yes, TDD might be a useful correctness technique."
"But examples aren't data."(但例子不是数据。)

"Most bugs are at the interaction level, but having a shaky foundation certaintly doesn't make things better."(多数 bug 在交互层,但地基摇晃绝不会让事情更好。)
"Testing does not substitute for thinking."(测试不能替代思考。)

"We shouldn't call people unprofessional just because they disagree with us."(不应因为别人不同意就骂人家"不专业"。)

《Augmented Coding: Beyond the Vibes》记录他用 AI 代理("genie")以 TDD 纪律开发 Rust/Python B+ Tree 库(BPlusTree3,约 4 周)。

"In vibe coding you don't care about the code, just the behavior of the system. If there's an error, you feed it back into the genie in hopes of a good enough fix. In augmented coding you care about the code, its complexity, the tests, & their coverage."

"You can see from the first commits that I was trying to get the genie to use TDD. ... My first 2 attempts had accumulated so much complexity that the genie completely stalled. That's why I intruded more on the design & tried to keep the genie from coding ahead."

"1. Loops. 2. Functionality I hadn't asked for (even if it was a reasonable next step). 3. Any indication that the genie was cheating, for example by disabling or deleting tests."(作弊 = 禁用或删除测试。)

(Tidy First)、"Use the simplest solution that could possibly work"。

"I feel good about the correctness & performance, not so good about the code quality."(正确性与性能满意,代码质量不满意。)

Fucci et al. 2016test-first 与 test-last 无显著差异经 Wayne 转述(受控实验,小样本)

(Kent: "The on-call is the feedback loop that teaches you what tests you didn't write.")。
    • 甜点区:算法/数据结构/有清晰接口的核心域逻辑(JUnit 本身、编译器中间结果、Beck 2025 的 B+ Tree)——测试跑得快、失败指向单一、接口稳定;
    • 失效区:并发与安全(Beck 2002 原文承认 TDD 不足以机械证明目标)、IO 重/集成性质的代码(DHH:controller 该集成测试、view 该系统测试)、测试环境与生产保真度差距大的场合;
    • 衰减判据(Beck 2014):测试变慢 / 单次失败可能故障数增多 / 测试与实现耦合 / 保真度下降——四者任一恶化,TDD 净价值下降,应退回 test-last 或集成测试。

  4. 写测试的判据从"教条"换成"增量":delta coverage(这个测试提供了什么独有信息?)
